On March 31, the Alliance for Industrial Efficiency joined coalition comments addressing Emergency Preparedness Requirements for Medicare and Medicaid providers. The proposed rule requires onsite backup power sources for medical providers and encourages measures which promote greater use of onsite power generation, including a requirement for facilities of a certain size to consider a cost-benefit analysis of onsite power generation from systems such as those that utilize combined heat and power (CHP) technologies. Our comments emphasize the economic, reliability and environmental benefits of CHP and showcase several success stories where CHP systems enabled hospitals to “keep their lights on” during extreme weather events.
