After last year’s success, Cogeneration Day USA is coming back on November 9th. This year’s event will be held in Long Beach, California, and the Alliance for Industrial Efficiency is an official partner organization. The event is an all-day symposium designed to educate policymakers, developers, and end users about the energy savings potential of combined heat and power (CHP) systems. It is organized by the Cogeneration Channel, an online platform developed by Alliance member AB Energy, whose aim is to promote awareness of CHP through videos that cover a multitude of topics, ranging from industrial operations to the use of biogas as a fuel for these systems.

The event will feature six panels covering subjects that range from financing a CHP project to case studies of CHP applications. The all-day event will also include an opening and closing statement from the Executive Director of the Alliance for Industrial Efficiency Jennifer Kefer—see below video featuring Kefer.

One session will explore the unique considerations faced by projects in California. For example, Senior Account Executive of On-Site Power Generation at Southern California Gas, David Carrell, will be speaking about CHP facilities in California. Carrell works with businesses to help implement natural gas-powered energy generation systems and energy efficiency projects.

Gene Kogan, the Director for the Department of Energy Western CHP Technical Assistance Partnership (TAP) will address the use of CHP systems in microgrids. The Western CHP TAP provides technical assistance to support the implementation of CHP, Waste Heat to Power (WHP), and District Energy projects in California, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii. Kogan also currently serves as the Principal Investigator on many California Energy Commission grant projects at the Center for Sustainable Energy.

Neeharika Naik-Dhungel, the Program Manager at EPA’s CHP Partnership program, will help demystify the federal permitting process for CHP. Naik-Dhungel is the lead at EPA on CHP policy and technical issues and previously worked with municipalities and Fortune 100 companies on energy issues. Rex Wait, President of Control Technology, will complement Naik-Dhungel’s presentation with a discussion of state permitting requirements.

The event is chock full of many other noteworthy speakers and promises to provide valuable education and networking opportunities for all participants. Policy makers, utilities, and end users alike are encouraged to attend to learn more about CHP and how it can help hosts save money and energy, become more resilient and competitive, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The full schedule is available on the website.
